The Facelift Procedure

1. The Consultation

The consultation is one of the unique experiences you will have at Blue Illusion. Our approach is radically different from a traditional consultation, and we truly believe in a minimally invasive approach. Dr Mehta will make understanding your concerns and goals a top priority. Once he has listened to your concerns, he will utilize his expert training and experience to create a customized treatment plan that will work for you.

Many facelift techniques are used throughout the country. Most of these techniques vary in the extent and depth of the dissection and the layers of the facial tissue moved. Even though many techniques can provide similar results, we may recommend a particular technique depending on your individual skin change patterns. At Blue Illusion, Dr. Mehta is superbly trained in facelifting techniques and will discuss the pros and cons of each technique during the consultation. It is our goal to ensure that you feel well informed and comfortable in making the decision to choose the appropriate procedure for you.

2. Choosing the Right Procedure for You

Often, results are more dramatic combining a simpler mini-facelift with other facial rejuvenation techniques such as volume restoration instead of an extensive facelift procedure. Our doctors take pride in informing you about all of your options to obtain the safest, cost-effective and most cosmetically pleasing outcome. An increasing majority of our patients take advantage of the convenience and safety of our in-office BeautiLift which provides amazing results in a short one-hour procedure. A facelift will not, however, completely remove every fold, line, and wrinkle. Other options exist to treat these problems, including Botox, Fillers, Laser Treatment, Dermabrasion, and Chemical Peels. Facelift procedures may be combined with a Forehead and Brow Lift, upper and/or lower Eyelid Surgery, and Facial implants. These additional procedures may be performed at the same time and in combination with facelift and neck lift surgery, or as independent procedures at a later date. Dr. Mehta will review each of these options and help you understand exactly which procedures and techniques will work for you.

3. Surgery Day

All patients must avoid taking aspirin (or anti-inflammatory drugs) for at least 10 days prior to surgery. This is because such medications may induce blood-thinning. Patients who smoke are also asked to stop for at least two weeks prior to the procedure — because smoking delays the healing process. On the morning of your procedure, doctors recommend that you wear loose-fitting clothing, and make some arrangement for transportation home after surgery. Further instructions will be provided during consultations.

4. Recovery and Results

Recovery from a facelift procedure varies with each person. The recovery process of the facelift can take anywhere between 7 and 10 days. With our in-office BeautiLift, we have been able to significantly reduce recovery time, allowing our clients to return to work and routine activity much faster. After recovering from a facelift, patients can get back to their daily lives, but are encouraged to take it slow, so the patient can achieve the best result. Limiting yourself to strenuous exercise, heavy lifting or housework is advised for at least two weeks. The facelift procedure provides long-lasting results and makes you look 10 years younger; however, patients are also encouraged to take care of their skin. Patients should maintain a good skin care regimen and protect their skin from sun exposure; this ensures they will get the best results from their facelift surgery.

Some common Facelift Surgery Questions

What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?

A facelift is designed to counteract the effects of time, gravity, stress, genetics and various adversities, facelift surgery can help you look more youthful and refreshed. Through the use of advanced surgical techniques that tighten sagging skin, remove excess fat deposits, and smooth facial lines and creases, Dr. Mehta achieves results that look relaxed and natural.

Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?

When a surgery is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent. Our surgeons are board-certified with impeccable credentials and training. These credentials help ensure the highest standards of care and your utmost safety. Still, individuals vary greatly in their anatomy, their physical reactions, and their healing abilities. The outcome is not completely predictable. Potential complications associated with facelifts include hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that must be removed by the surgeon), injury to the nerves that control facial muscles (usually temporary), infection, and reactions to the anesthesia. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers. You can reduce your risks by closely following your surgeon’s advice both before and after surgery.

Am I a good candidate for a facelift?

We consider several things in evaluating facelift candidates at our La Jolla practice, among them are overall health, skin and muscle condition, and bone structure. If you are interested in having a facelift procedure, Dr. Mehta can discuss your objectives with you in person and determine whether you are a good candidate for cosmetic surgery. During your initial consultation at Blue Illusion, you will meet with Dr. Mehta to determine your candidacy for a facelift procedure or other alternatives for facial rejuvenation.

Can I expect permanent results from a facelift?

The rejuvenating results of a facelift are significant, long-lasting and carry on for up to 10 years. Time, however, marches on for all of us. A facelift cannot stop the aging process or eliminate the effects of gravity. Despite natural aging; however, the improved appearance brought about by a more harmonious balance to your face with a facelift should last for a very long time.

A thorough discussion and careful examination with Dr. Mehta will help determine which approach is best suited to meet your needs.

Is a facelift performed under general anesthesia?

During a facelift procedure, general or local anesthesia can be used with intravenous sedation. The popular in-office BeautiLift is performed with oral sedation and local anesthesia, maximizing your convenience and safety.

How long before I can resume normal activities after my facelift?

Recovery from a facelift procedure varies with each person. The recovery process of the facelift can take anywhere between 7 and 10 days. After recovering from a facelift, patients can get back to their daily lives but are encouraged to take it slow, so the patient can achieve the best result.
